Of Mexican Descent
H
has been smashing the LA Underground rap scene for a decade now. They attribute their success to their willingness to perform any and everywhere at the drop of a hat. They are co-owners of independent label, Afterlife Recordz, to whom they are signed under. They have done countless shows and appearances in affiliation with their Chicano roots.
2MEX and XOLOLANXINXO met through mutual friends in 1990 and formed the group Of Mexican Descent. Since then they have been on a mission to represent LA hip-hop to the fullest!
They were weekly performers at the world renowned Goodlife Café (LA open Mic spot from 1989 to 1994) where having skills on the Mic was a must. They also performed on many high school/college campuses; juvenile detention centers, and has been very active in the community performing at various charity/fundraising events. This group was among the first from Goodlife to stand behind the concept of artists controlling their own musical destiny eventually resulting in Afterlife Entertainment LLC (independent label, ran and own by its artists, which has secured several lucrative deals in 2000). They perform constantly all over the United States and have had the opportunity to show skills in other countries as well (Japan, Cuba, Mexico, Canada).
There is much talk of this group's ability to project themselves lyrically in both English and Spanish fluently.
In 1993, 2MEX (head of Afterlife Promotions) co-founded Malathion Promotions (independent promotion company) and has worked with Columbia Records, Geffen Records, Loud Records, Interscope Records…the list goes on. He learned much from these experiences and has been a great asset to his own label. He is also the Head of Promotions for curbserver.com (web community dedicated to the music and lifestyle of underground hip-hop) where their groups' music is featured in the form of mp3 downloads and regular rotation on the 24/7 broadcast that is streamed. The group has sold 1,000's on 1,000's of CDs, tapes, and records through grassroots means at concerts, in local stores, through the Internet and on the streets!
This group first released an EP with Capitol Records' artists, Dilated Peoples, entitled "Old World Chaos". After that came the LP "Exitos Y Mas Exitos" that featured a wide variety of artists and producers including label mates, C.V.E. They have been featured on nationally distributed LA works such as "Beneath The Surface" produced by OD (producer from the Goodlife) and "Cater to the DJs" produced by Fat Jack (Mass Men Records).
2MEX dropped a concept album with producer, Mumstheword, entitled "Mind Clouders" in 2000 independently. 2MEX has an unreleased album put together by close friend and engineer, Nuahi, dedicated to the memory of hardcore B-BOY, MEMO who past away July, 2000. 2MEX also is a member of westcoast crew, Visionaries (Up Above Records) who just recently released their 2nd album entitled, "Sophomore Jinx". Of Mexican Descent is featured on the 2000 Afterlife albums, "Welcome to the Afterlife" and "Declaration of an Independent" as well as "Afterlife Radio" and "Curbserver Mixshow Vol#1".
